Engelland was one of the few defensemen available who brings a nice combination of toughness and leadership. Plenty of reasons why Engelland was more valuable to Vegas. Engelland was a UFA. They could have signed him without picking him.
Everyone knew he was going to Vegas anyway.
It was a punt pure and simple.
Now I agree that values can change over time.
But I doubt anyone wants to take a full value Brouwers and Stajans. Money will need to be retained or salary returned.
