I think they were going for whiny and annoying with his character. He started out as a science nerd, not an officer or in the military.
One could complain about the inconsistencies of the technology, holographic interfaces, etc, but meh whatever I want it to look cool, it doesn't bug me if it doesn't fit 100% in the timeline. |

You could argue that the slick jewellery buttons and crappy looking screens that are plainly cut out drawings in TOS as a massive leap forward in human interfaces.
