I'm guessing that they wanted to do their own version of string theory that involves bio theory. At least that's how they explained it.
Did it make a lot of sense? Nope, but its start trek where you can create inverse tachyon beams on the fly in seconds.
I found it interesting that they just put a convict in a room with a star fleet officer, in reality she'd be in a brig and then to work, and as a room mate, I'm sleeping with a phaser if I have a convinced mutineer who assaulted a captain in my room, but they need to have the foil that breaks down Michael and makes her more human.
It'll be interested to see what the CBS streaming numbers are like over the next few episodes.
