After a number of years hearing good things about it, my husband and I finally tried Alloy last night. We tend to favour tasting menus in higher end restaurants and pair them with wine - we did the same last night. Overall, we weren't impressed. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great. When we walked in, the smell of fish walloped us in the face (I'm not a fan of fish, so it wasn't a pleasant smell for me), we found that a bit odd. Within 15 mins, I coudln't smell it, not sure if we got used to it or what.

We ordered the tasting menu and asked to have it paired with wine. The server was friendly, butI don't know if she didn't know anything about the wine she was serving us or if she just didn't bother to tell us more. Our amuse bouche was served with an "Italian sparkling", our main with a "Spanish Rioja blend", dessert with an "Australian sweet wine" - nothing about the grapes, the vineyards, why they chose to pair it with the food, nothing. Overall, the food was good, but again, we weren't blown away. ( I did love the ahi tuna ceviche and considering I'm not a fan of fish normally, that really surprised me) So while nothing was bad, I felt it just wasn't worth what we paid. We have been to Q Haute three times and were blown away every time, this paled in comparison.

We're going to try "Anew Table" in a few weeks, hopefully it'll be a bit better.
