When you get stuck in snow- not the type of snow we get in Calgary but the type that people from Saskatchewan and east gets, you have accumulations. New snow on top of old snow on top of older snow. As you spin your tires you end up cutting ruts into the snow into the deep layers. At that point having any extra weight is a bad thing, because now you are fighting gravity.
Weight in a vehicle helps you to not get stuck. Once you are stuck you need to get that weight out.
