This is not true. I dropped of a deep freeze about 10 days ago and I knew I would have to pay the fee ($17.00) for the refrigerant drainage however I was also charged the minimum $20 dump fee. So total was $37 to drop it off for recycling.
You are better off dropping them off with a scrap metal place. They will take appliances for free (unless they need to be drained of refrigerant then it is $15).
