Now I didn't think it was helmet to helmet nor did his head bounce off the turf. He was smoked as hard as you will see, no question, but it wasn't a head shot. When he got up you can see he is feeling it, but nothing indicated head injury.
I think both he and Maas have a reasonable question as to why it was done. I think it needs to be pretty clearly head trauma before forcibly removing a guy.

Agreed. If you watch the replay, it wasn't a head shot. But the sheer force of the hit and Riley's reaction caused concern for those spotting for head injury. So his statement about being taken out for a hit to the head is false. He was removed because of a possible head injury due to a violent impact.
Quite simply, the mechanism of injury has no bearing on whether a player gets pulled for concussion protocol.
That's how I see it anyway.
