Maybe I am a "soft fan," but there is nothing in the game that I see today which suggests to me that chest thumping, scrimmaging between whistles and other forms of hockey voodoo make any positive contribution to their outcome. If by "toughness" you mean endurance, fortitude and determination, then that is another matter, but I suspect you have something different in view.

Goons are gone but any player will tell you a strong deterrent is needed even in todays game.
Case in point. the minute it became clear Minnesota was targeting Gaudreau's hands Granlund should have had a stick broken over his, and if that didn't work when Staal finally broke Johnny's hand he should have lost his teeth immediately. your top forward gone with a broken hand and zero response.
That night in Minnesota was a kick in the nuts to the leadership group, I sure hope they learned from that because that night would have never happened when Iginla was around.
