If our window to win with this top 5 d-core is indeed in the next 3 years, then from that perspective Duchene is a greater 'current window' asset than Bennett.
(This isn't to say the Flames won't be competing beyond then, they likely will, but if Giordano loses another gear in that time or they can't retain Hamonic beyond his contract, then a retool may be required, or you cross your fingers some youth develop into top 3 d-men)
Waiting for Bennett to come along and displace Backlund probably means waiting out that 3 year window to allow him to develop into a bonafide top 6 center. So it depends on if the Flames feel they have a chance to win with the defence they have in place now, and want to take advantage by fast tracking some of that still-developing talent on the front end.
Fun thoughts but at the end of the day I do think they maintain the 'process' and continue to let the current forward core come into its own, regardless of how strong the D will be for the 3 seasons that the top 5 are locked up.
That also said, that 'window' means nothing if neither Smith nor anyone else in the wings steps up to be the starting goaltender this team needs.
