I'm not talking about cheering for Roger, the fans can cheer as loudly as they'd like for whomever they'd like. I'm talking about when the fans are cheering against Roger's opponents. The 2015 US Open (and Wimbledon too for that matter), it was almost comical how the fans were reacting to every Novak miss, every error and service fault. You'd have thunk Roger had just won his fourth calendar slam in a row with how they reacted. I know that Novak was bordering on unbeatable during that stretch, and we all wanted another major, but loud applause after a first serve fault in the first set of a match on serve was ridiculous. Same with the crowd in Miami this year against Kyrgios, Kyrgios likely would have won if the crowd weren't so boisterously pro-Federer.
So again scream your lungs out for Roger when he wins games or points, but cheering raucously every time the opponent makes a mistake is just uncalled for. And no crowd has been worse for that the past few years than the New York crowd. That's not what we saw last night obviously, but if Roger does make it deep into this tournament and gets into a tight situation, we're likely to see it again.
