But on the news they said it is painless and people don't realize they are going blind. So how is this possible? I couldn't have stared at the sun if I tried. Just like on any sunny day even the slightest glimpse hurts my sensitive eyes and I look away. How would someone not notice?

Yeah it's for somewhere in totality in the minutes before/after the sun actually being covered where there's a serious risk cause the sky is getting dark and people start to think it's okay but the sun is still ruthless until it's
completely covered. Also places where it's like 95% max totality and the sky is noticeably darker so people just be morons and look.
