Of course, one would probably not know this in 1984, so no one can really be blamed.
Any new arena going forward needs to have both form and function, with versatility/expandability in use going forward in mind.

I attended a Smashing Pumpkins concert in the dome back in the 90s. I lost a good chunk of hearing in my left ear in spite of the "acoustic shortcomings". The Pumpkins seemed to have no problem pumping out ridiculous levels of sound. I think that problem is a little bit overblown.
IIRC, it has more to do with staging and lighting than acoustics, but then I'm not an engineer.
