I've been 6 years in row up till 2015, the D&D and Pathfinder halls are massive and people play all night. I am more into euro and Ameritrash boardgames and there's huge amount those games being played. It's still a convention thats dedicated only tabletop gaming. You will see the Cosplayers that don't care about anything but Cosplay but I think they go to all the conventions.
What I like about Gen Con compared to other conventions is it lets you experience all types of games, you can play test games coming soon, play in big tournaments, or just try all the games your curious about. I also like how it's giant mall for boardgames, I bring home close to three suitcases of games, not because they're cheap but you can get hard find games and pre released games that won't hit stores for a few months.
