Both of them, in particular Brodie, struggled with consistency early in the season. Even after they were put back together Brodie still played badly. It wasn't until Dougie got put with Gio that they become arguably the best D pairing in the entire league.
Having Brodie with a solid partner and Gio-Dougie from the start instead of midway through should do wonders for this season.
