I'm still not convinced they're not some ancient time traveling Klingons, hence the odd look. There's lots of ways it can be explained story-wise that you can see the producers not wanting to come out and immediately spoil. Heck, we don't even know how or why everyone ends up on the Discovery. It's better to hold judgment until you can actually see a final product.
