If you're the kind of person who has the regurarly goes to a doctor to check for vitamin deficiencies, chances are you live a pretty healthy lifestyle anyway.
Supplements are a way for people like me to feel a bit better about their diet, and possibly it actually helps with some deficiencies I'm not aware of.

I think at some point people do go for blood work. Asking to get your Vitamin D checked when you do that isn't a big deal. Do you need to go get it checked before you start taking some Vitamin D vitamins? Probably not as most people are deficient.
I'm just saying it isn't that hard to do yearly checks and ask your doctor to check certain things you feel you might be deficient in. I had low iron last time I gave blood which was completely unknown to me, and certainly not something I would ask my doctor about nor ever dream of taking vitamins for.
Without the blood test I would have had no idea.
