He said he remembers throwing a grenade and waking up in a hospital to men screaming at him that he'd killed an American soldier. For years, Khadr believed Speer's death was his doing, but now he isn't so sure. Either way, it matters to Khadr.

Take the money out of the equation, this is about justice. He was wronged and he challenged that legally and won. If someone was a known gang member and they were wrongfully accused of killing someone you knew who was actually killed by someone else from the same gang, only to be exonerated after serving 20 years in prison, if that person sued the justice department and was awarded damages would you feel as though they should pay that money to the family of the person they didn't murder?

We don't know what damages a judge would have awarded because the Liberal govt didn't let the case go that far and instead chose to offer what they deemed a fair amount.
Let the elected officials pay for the damages. Taxpayers shouldn't be responsible for their screw ups.
