Look at the facts. He was a good possession player with Detroit last year on a godawful team and actually managed to produce despite playing with horrible linemates. He doesn't rely on the powerplay for his offense, his shooting percentage last year was in line with his typical numbers (12.8%), and is still relatively young compared to the rest of the FA class (only 34). He scored 48 points in 68 games last year playing under 15 minutes a night, and he's a big presence at 6'2". He strikes me as a natural fit.

The ban comment was in jest, obviously (I thought).
But Vanek has been one of the laziest, least engaged players in the league for years. Years. There is a reason why he keeps bouncing from team to team. And the fact that he put up decent points and possession numbers on a bad team impresses me not at all. In fact I would expect it from him. No pressure, no contact, no problem. But he has proven over and over that, when things actually matter, he disappears.
