Just last year we were paying Dennis Wideman $5.25 million and Deryk Engelland $2.9 million. Both are guys that are either out of a job, or barely hanging on to an NHL job at this point.
Stone is 27, a productive player with a good fit on the Flames, and is going to make $3.5 million for multiple years. He took a $500 K pay cut on his most recent contract in his prime playing years to sign in Calgary for 3 years.
If things don't work out, that's at least a very tradeable contract.
If it works out, the Flames have the best defense in the entire league bar none.
Please...tell me what the downside to this is again?
