Bill Clinton ordered attacks against Al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan and Sudan in response to the 1998 terrorist bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which had occurred two weeks earlier. The unrelated fact that the terrorist bombings and retaliatory strikes occurred at the same time as the Lewinsky investigation was pounced upon by opportunist Republicans who accused Clinton of "wagging the dog" and using Osama bin Laden to distract the American public from his domestic scandals. One wonders if Clinton might have been more aggressive against Al Qaeda in 1998-2000 (and possibly prevented 9/11) if the Republicans had supported the president's response against what was, at the time, the worst terrorist attack against Americans citizens.
