I was thinking that all other things considered, it would have been a win-win scenario if Treliving could trade Brouwer for Methot straight in. Methot has a slightly larger cap hit ($4.9M until 2019) than Brouwer ($4.5M until 2020).
McPhee likes Brouwer (or, at least, used to like him) a lot. VGK's offense would be improved with Brouwer. McPhee needs to make trades fast.
We would get an expensive but bona-fide big&mean top-5 defenseman to play with a younger player (Kulak/Wotherspoon) and can let Stone go sign with Ottawa. Stone would be asking for $4M anyway, so not a big deal of saving over Methot. Yet, we would free up some reasonable chunk of salary to go after a 1st line RW (Radulov? Marleau?).
Obviously, Methot wants to go back to Ottawa (as it's the only team he's willing to waive his NTC for) , but wouldn't hurt to try and ask. Would be a killer defense if we can get him.
Just thought this would be a nice trade making sense for both teams. Thoughts?
