I think now is the perfect time for Tre to be trading picks to "mortgage" our future.

When most of your core is in their 30s and trading picks for player is a last gasp attempt to win a Cup before the window closes, it is definitely mortgaging the future for current success.

However, when you are exiting a rebuild and the team has recently stockpiled picks to help that rebuild, there is no better time to sacrifice picks to improve the team at the beginning of the window, instead of 5 years from now when the window for a cup is closing.

Picks can have an ebb and a flow to them. Having consistent picks year to year is nice and can help sustain long term success, but with the current way NHL teams are structured, and the importance of value contracts, I think it is shrewd to make that sacrifice now as opposed to later.
