How did you compute that? I'd like to see your calculations please. If Ferland was playing with Crosby you don't think PIT would've won the cup? Seems a bit presumptuous. And Ferland is still a young developing player, we probably have not seen the best of him yet. Same goes for Bennett. Same goes for Tkachuk. Monahan and Gaudreau may not have peaked yet either. Hamilton probably has some room to improve too.
And if winger is an issue heading into the trade deadline and Treliving feels we're ready to contend then you go grab the best winger available at the deadline. Some years there is a Hossa available, or a Gaborik. And if they are UFAs you aren't stuck with them longterm. IMO grabbing an overpaid sniper now could have bad cap implications longterm.
Right now getting a winger is not a huge issue. Getting a 4th and 5th defensemen is a much, much bigger issue.
