There is a good discussion ongoing now on TSN 1040 in Vancouver about McPhee's approach to the expansion draft. Lawrence Gilman—former AGM of the Vancouver Canucks and one of the architects of the expansion draft—is explaining the balance McPhee strove to strike between selecting for position, cap hit, contract status, and with an eye to being both competitive in the short term and building for the future. In his estimation this was an "asset harvest event" from which McPhee made out very well. VGK will be pretty bad this year, but that does not matter in a new market. However, they are quite well positioned to improve quickly, which is the real key to their long-term success.
