I can say that the team simply dropped the ball on drafting players that fit in this timeline. If they hit on the Poirier, Klimchuk, Witherspoon, or any other players drafted in that timeline they would have been in a predicament as Ferland and maybe another player would have had to be left unprotected. Since they whiffed on those drafts largely and a lot of their roster bottom guys are below average or overpaid they were "lucky". You can argue that unlucky teams simply have better organizational depth than the Flames and I believe there's some truth to that. God bless him but if Ferland is a top line winger on your team, you have depth issues.
