My guess is they're suggesting he needs Prednisone (potent corticosteroid), which may affect his play a bit. It all seems a bit hokey to me, but as with many of these things, it's plausible. I'm sure tons of players could have played on shorter courses of Prednisone in the past. Players with colitis have played in the NHL and I'm sure they've had flare ups. If the allergy is that severe, the only real resolution would be to remove the allergen exposure (equipment).
I'm not sure what the WADA rules or NHL PED are with regards to corticosteroids. They don't have any obvious performance enhancing effects, and most if not all of the side effects would be deleterious.
