Calgary's drafting has improved in that time, but development still seems to be a large problem.

I think the development issue is overstated by many. We didn't develop many good defensemen because we haven't drafted many until recently. Blame Sutter's trading of 2nd rounders and lack of accumulation of picks as the biggest reason for this.
Evaluating defensemen strictly on points would be a foolish way of doing it. How is his overall game? I haven't watched him a ton but it sure sounds like he's been up and down in terms of his overall game. I'm not convinced he's the blue-chipper you're making him out to be. If you think he's anywhere near a Hamilton then of course you make the deal. But to me he looks more like a 4-5 guy long term, although like I said, I haven't watched him closely enough to be confident in that projection. But if he was a stud why would MIN choose Brodin over him?
