This move is, yes. But the team is nothing like the 2009 Sutter era. The core of the team is way, way younger and is very much on the upswing. Whereas that entire team's agenda was milking everything they could out of players that were on their last few prime years, a core revolving around one RW.
We have to take care of the two or so seasons until Parsons/Gillies are ready to play games somehow. Spending under 5 mil on a proven starter with two seasons remaining seems like the way to go. Would people rather give up much better assets to get MAF, who might not even be a better goaltender here? Some would love it initially, but we'd quickly learn that MAF doesn't have a lot on Smith or Elliott aside from the winning background. And two of the three cup teams he was a part of were won on the performance of Matt Murray.
