At best Tanev is a guy you can move up to your 3-4 spot as a defensive guy to compliment a highly offensive D man or he can be used in a 5-6 shutdown pairing. He is not a top pairing D man like Canuck fans make him out to be, he has little to none offensive abilities or awareness. He is a one trick pony. I would take Hamonic every time over him because he is a more rounded D man. As for Gio, Tanev might be better defensively but he is not remotely even close to the overall D man Gio is.
