His basis on protecting Brouwer was based on his "experience" over the years that teams don't sign UFA's on long term deals and then decide a year later they don't want him. Pinder challenged him saying the guy was a disappointment that ended up on the 4th line so you could excuse the Flames for not feeling they got what they bargained for. So for anyone that may be concerned that Ferland may be left unprotected just know that there is no rumour or evidence the Flames think this way and it was simply Spector's opinion based on his "experience over the years". Nothing more.
The McDavid stuff was also humorous as he said McDavid is only 21 and has his entire career to make big $$$. He may want to accept less so the Oilers can build the team around him and cash in on his next contract. Sounds totally plausible except players never accept discounts. Monahan didn't, Gaugreau didn't, etc. No agent will ever recommend his client take less money for the benefit of his team as McDavid could suffer some major concussions as an Oiler which may derail his career and future earnings. Every player should be trying to get as much money as possible on every contract because there's no guarantees that his career will go as planned. He's really, really trying hard to create some plausible sense of hope that McDavid is going to take a discount for the Oilers.
