A fantastic champion as well, coming back from multiple injuries, re-inventing his game and building on it. Amazing that IMO, the #1 and #2 players of all time are playing at the same time, and it's very clear that none of the new generation really has what it takes. I include players like Djokovic and Murray in the "new generation", because clearly they don't have the mental fortitude that Nadal and Fed have.
I wonder what happens 5 years from now. I think after Fed and Nadal are done, there'll be a transition period with random unranked players suddenly taking a slam, or a young "up and comer" taking a slam then falling off the face of the earth (someone like Thiem). The bar is just so incredibly high.

that's pretty harsh on Nole and Andy, who own 15 slams between them but were probably denied at least 10 more because they're in the same era as the two goats. the game of "if this guy didn't exist then..." could be endlessly applied and just gets us nowhere though. Fed wrecked the slam counts of every player from his generation (Hewitt, Roddick, Safin, etc.), but Fed in turn had 5 (!) French wins taken away by raging bullface. I just think you can't be too disappointed in any player from the last 15 years, because the mountains have been basically unscalable for that long.
as for the future, take comfort that we will all bear witness to Felix the Great. no pressure on the kid or anything.
