If Trump fires Mueller, I don't think he's prepared for what the backlash would be. In that Quinnipiac poll from a couple days ago, respondents supported the hiring of Mueller 73%-15%, which was the most one-sided of any question asked. Firing him before the investigation has barely gotten started is awful optics.

As well, Trump can't fire him himself. He can instruct the AG to fire him, and since the AG has recused himself from the investigation, it would fall to Rosenstein. Rosenstein seemingly cares if not about doing the right thing then at least of the appearance of doing the right thing, as he strongly objected when he was scapegoated for the firing of Comey. I think it's unlikely Rosenstein fires him, at which point it's up to Trump to fire Rosenstein and appoint a deputy AG to fire Mueller. This is pretty-much exactly the Watergate Saturday Night Massacre scenario.
