Your contention is that it is a good system because the most populous and economically powerful state's votes were irrelevant in a close election?
If the presidency was determined by popular vote, the Republicans would be forced to present different policies and candidates for president. That they can win with less votes than their single opponent is one of the main causes of political dysfunction in America, not a strength of the system.
