That forward group looks good but replacing Backlund and his two-way 50 + point season (following 41, 42, 43, 47 point seasons) with Bennett who took a slight step back in his sophomore slump season and is still very young here would be a bigger loss at that 2nd pivot spot than you realize.
Backlund is and continues to be severely underrated at times and I think he is definitely part of the core here going forward.
Tkachuk - Monahan - Gaudreau
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Jankowski - Versteeg
Hathaway - Stajan - Lazar
... this is what I'm hoping to see - Deep at left wing even with sliding Gaudreau over to the off wing and all of the sudden the right side looks stronger too. Bennett riding shotgun with Backlund and Frolik could do wonders for his game too I think.
Edit:
Brouwer obviously is claimed in this scenario and Bouma gets the Bollig treatment.
Still ways to tinker too if we can let Stajan go or use him as a extra... would really dig to see Iggy play that 4th line role/PP specialist
Something like:
Iginla - Monahan - Gaudreau
Versteeg - Giordano
Tkachuk - Monahan - Gaudreau
Bennett/Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett/Jankowski - Iginla/Versteeg
Hathaway - Lazar - Iginla/Versteeg
That bottom 6 would be lethal with 5 of the 6 having lots of potential or experience in the top 6.
