Ahh, now you're starting to think about what the Caps would need. This is good, because you can now go back to your proposal and understand just how bad it is from Washington's perspective.
BTW, Nashville made exactly that type of trade just this year. Also, Taylor Hall was Edmonton's franchise player right up until they lucked out on the McDavid draft. And the Oilers dealt him for immediate improvement.
Washington would be looking for a player who replaces Ovechkin's 30-50 goals and offers a more well rounded game. Also, part of the motivation would be that a change at the top would spark the team's development enough for that final push.
So, of course, I hope you can now see why offering the Capitals a guy who would provide one third to one half of the scoring and some lottery tickets is not a viable proposal.

I like the smug "I did" as if you know anybody remotely close to being inside the Capitals war room and their intentions. For all you know, they released the idea of trading Ovechkin to the public in order to light a fire under Ovy's ass. Another alternative is that Washington intends on rebuilding on the fly, much like St.Louis is doing trading away Elliot, Shattenkirk, Oshie and acquiring Yakupov. They are, in fact, losing several more players other than Ovy.
So Caps are going to pull a Subban/Weber trade and replace Ovechkin with a Crosby/Matthews/Laine or star defenseman? The only scenario that makes sense is trading Ovechkin for Perry and hopes Perry rebounds, or maybe guys like Eberle, Neal, or Toews. But again, non of these guys will do what you claim and both replace Ovechkin's goals and provide a more well rounded game.
Toews is the only player that makes sense to me. But I think Washington would be smarter going with the Frolik + deal.
