It can be unnerving for a crowd of nearly 20 000 people scream you suck when you let a goal in. I imagine it would be hard for a goalie, no matter how cool they are under pressure. i'd imagine there's a few fanbases with things like that we don't know about exactly that happen during commercials.
I think for "purist" fanbases it might be hard to catch on... but new ones without a lot of hockey tradition, its just something fun to do during games... College games it works because you have the college bands and the band leaders to organize things... here's the University of Michigan version
