Who said anything about improving the Capitals for the next season? Seriously, in what scenerio does a team place their franchise player on the trade block with the interntions of improving immediately? The only way the Capitals improve without Ovechkin is if they package Ovechkin with another asset to get another star forward like Crosby, McDavid, Laine or Matthews. Or they make a hockey deal for like a defensemen or goalie.
There is no way they replace a 30-50 goal scorer. There is simple no way to replace and improve upon who is the best goal scorer of our generation
