I think one of the reasons the Flames have been suggested as a target in a couple different articles is simply how hard it is to find a fit.
Where the Flames make some sense is the majority of their core are signed and locked up under $7M per. Having said that Bennett, Tkachuk, Backlund, and Brodie need new deals in the 4 years left on Ovie's deal. The other half of the Flames core Monahan, Gaudreau, Hamilton, Gio all have contracts that expire at the same time or after Ovechkin.
