Optimally, he's a centre because that position is more valuable to a team in general. However, today's centres tend to be bigger (Sam's not small but not exactly big). His game to my untrained eye is that of a winger - he likes to bust in from the outside.

Look, if it works better on the ice, the Flames are better for it, as opposed to trying something that works better on paper. Bobby Hull was a centre in junior, methinks. Kessel was a centre in college (can anyone imagine him playing C in the NHL?). IRRC Loob was a centre in Sweden.
