I think that sometimes it's beneficial to dumb complicated topics down to a point where everyone can at least understand the base level of discussion.

Like, I get that the whole "terrorist" thing is extremely complicated, when you boil everything else away, I really think the basis of everything is that ISIS is to Islam what the KKK is to Christianity.

This is how I explain things to people. When someone complains about a burqa, I ask them if people shouldn't be allowed to wear crucifixes because of the Klan. An oversimplification, for sure, but at least it's effective.

Sometimes things get so complicated that people lose track of the basis. If we can bust up the Klan without banning Christianity or punishing Christians, why can't we bust up ISIS without banning Islam or punishing Muslims?

(Personally, I think there's some correlation between "Klan-think" and the examples of irrational hatred we see directed at Muslims in the news, and I think that's the starting point for any kind of meaningful resolution, but that's also where the complexities begin.)
