The most bizarre thing about this whole health care thing in the US, everyone argues about how much should be spent, if there should be basic coverage or not, if person A should be paying for health care for person B, etc...
But the actual cost of health care and how to bring that down to something closer to the rest of the world almost NEVER gets discussed (unless it's how to get cheap drugs from Canada). I guess that's because so many politicians' pockets are filled with money from the people who profit from sky high health care costs, because that seems like such an easy campaigning point.

That's maybe part of it, but to me the reason is the same with gun control, health Care, drug policy, immigration, etc.: They navel gaze and reinvent wheels because no other country has their divine exceptionalism. There's a never talked about belief among citizens and policy makers that other countries aren't useful examples because none of them are as advanced.
Ask an average (certainly not all) American or politician about health Care or drug polocy and they talk about the issue as though no other country has faced it. Missing from these policy debates are real world examples of other options. Single payer is called a distaster when virtually every other developed nation has it and is far more successful at it.
