Carey Price turns 30 next year.

They're not the same goalie, but the point is that there are very few goalies who you can predictably expect to maintain a year to year performance level, especially after 30. Price is clearly one of the elite goalies in the past decade or so, so it might be worth it, and I couldn't fault the Habs for giving him $9m. However, people should recognize what a risk it is to do that.
I would take my chances on Price at 9M

anybody half decent is gonna cost you at least 4M or 5M eventually

stop paying 4th liners 2+M and the difference pays for itself
