Goaltending is also the single least predictable position in hockey. Look at it this way: in 2010, Ryan Miller was 30 years old and was undisputedly the best goalie on the planet. Would you have wanted to sign him to a 7 year deal for big money?

They're not the same goalie, but the point is that there are very few goalies who you can predictably expect to maintain a year to year performance level, especially after 30. Price is clearly one of the elite goalies in the past decade or so, so it might be worth it, and I couldn't fault the Habs for giving him $9m. However, people should recognize what a risk it is to do that.
