NAGY DELIVERS CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

Ladislav Nagy celebrates with teammates after scoring his second of the game to give the Capitals the 3-2 overtime victory.

UNIONDALE, NY - The Islanders dominated for most of the game but were able to salvage only a point in Tuesday night's affair versus the visiting Capitals.

28-16 was the final shots tally with the New York Islanders surprisingly leading the way. The final score however, was less favourable for Islander fans as the visitors clipped the home team 3-2 in overtime.

Marek Svatos opened the scoring in the first period when he received a soft pass from Tim Connolly and finished the play off with a slick move which left Auld moving the opposite direction the puck eventually went.

The goal was Svatos' 8th of the season and allowed the young sniper to extend his point-scoring streak to six games.

The Islanders took the one-goal lead into the third period with solid defensive play before two quick powerplay goals allowed the Capitals to take their first lead of the game.

Markus Naslund's 8th of the season tied the game at one goal apiece early in the third period and Ladislav Nagy's marker six minutes later forged the visitors ahead to the shock of the sold out crowd at Nassau Veterans Memorial Colliseum.

Ryan Getzlaf would answer on the powerplay however, to push the game into overtime, re-directing a Marek Svatos slap-pass past Washington netminder Alex Auld.

Unfortunately for the Islanders, Ladislav Nagy would eventually score in overtime beating Steve Shields over the left shoulder with a slap shot from 10-feet out.

"The guys really played well tonight and I let them down," a discouraged Shields said afterwards. "I'll put it behind me though and be better the next time I get a chance."

"When you limit a team like the Washington Capitals to 16 shots against, it's the goalie's job then to answer the call," Head Coach Robinson said. "He simply didn't do that tonight. It's unfortunate."

The next game for the Islanders will be on Thursday in Pittsburgh.
