They are facing a cap crunch. Sure, they can simply let Vegas take a dman for free and bite the bullet. But look at their RFA's/UFA's this year:
RFA- Granlund
- Neiderreiter
- Folin
- Haula
- Schroeder
UFA
Subtract one d-man from that list, and MIN is still facing a pretty bad cap situation where they will have to move good players just to sign core players. It makes much more sense to try and solve multiple problems with any moves.

Fits well for Calgary to trade one protected player for another. Works well for Minny as they get a cheap player that even if exposed likely won't get picked up as there will still be better options to take.

I'd have to think there's much more attractive offers than that to entice MIN, if the offer revolves around a 1st round pick and a young player. The 1st would certainly get conversation started, but Lazar is definitely not up there when it comes to "young roster player" and none of our exempt AHL guys are ready.
