As United said, I believe the offer sheet compensation package is good enough. And I feel like with us he will sign in the 1st + 3rd range (
$3,755,233 to $5,632,847), but you pay the 1st + 2nd + 3rd range (
5,632,847 to $7,510,464) package because it sends MIN the message that we're aiming to sign him long-term (totally are) and big money (the kind of figure they know they can't match).
Minnesota has some very slippery options with Nino.
- They can protect him and lose another good player for nothing, but they are now faced with the task of somehow creating enough cap space to sign him up, and those options are neither desirable or guaranteed. If they protect him, the threat of the offersheet looms large - particularly because it would be after the expansion draft, and teams no longer need to worry about using a protection slot (thanks MIN). Protecting him is probably the worst option because it doesn't solve any of their problems - they're not even guaranteed to keep him.
- They can trade him (preferably to us) and solve some cap/expansion/lack of draft pick problems all at the same time. The good asset management option.
- They can leave him unprotected and potentially lose him for nothing.
