He's had similar stats as a back-up as Chad Johnson (outside of Johnson's bad year with the Islanders). We prefer him over Johnson because we haven't seen him much, but no guarantee he's any better.

There are no guarantees in hockey, period, but Raanta has been the better goalie for the last 3 seasons and is 3 years younger.
Raanta - 28 (just turned 28 days ago)
14/15 - .936
15/16 - .919
16/17 - .922
Johnson - 31 (turns 31 in less than a month)
14/15 - .889
15/16 - .920
16/17 - .910
Those stats aren't really that similar, and Raanta is at an age where a lot of goalies take the next step into a starter's role. Johnson at this point probably is what he is, a good backup.
