Ah, yes. It is always fun to play the hindsight regret game, but at the time of the draft Phaneuf was easily the right choice at #9. Hell, he scored 60 points in his second NHL season, and was a runner-up for the Norris Trophy that year.
It would have been amazing if the Flames had drafted Getzlaf, but this most certainly was not a "goof up," and definitely not among the most egregious.
