A big issue is that much of the crowd that restaurants are losing now are those like me, 40s with kids. I certainly spent my hours at the Ship, and the assorted hip restaurants when I was younger, but once I had kids, the choices for where to eat became much more limited. Honestly Boston Pizza or Phil's are legit places to go with two children. If the place doesn't have a reasonable cheap menu for kids, I can't even bother.
Only 7 more years until my kids can manage themselves, so see you in 2024!
