Read what I said.
Treliving had two deals in place at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
1. #6 Overall Pick for Matt Murray and Derek Pouliot.
2. #6 Overall Pick for Ben Bishop and Jonathan Drouin.
Both those deals were BEFORE they knew Tkachuk was going to drop #6. Both those deals fell through as a result.
Both those deals at the time were perfectly fair value for the #6 overall pick.
I ask again, what has Treliving done for this team? Everyone asserts he is a great GM but he really hasn't made one single awesome trade or signing.
Two years after the Hamilton trade it's very clear Calgary has lost that trade. Boston picks up a Top 4D man as well as a legit top line ring wing prospect. Hamilton would need to end up as a legit #1 Dman for that trade to end up being considered a good trade.
He trades a 2nd round pick for Brian Elliot. Even if the 2nd round pick ends up being a bust it was a deal that never should have been made. James Reimer was at least equally as good as Elliot and have no draft picks attached.
UFA/RFA signings like Bouma and Brouwer were horrible. Hell not buying out Wideman was equally as stupid as Feaster Signing him in the first place.
Fact is he has made a lot of desperation moves in an attempt to patch and bandaid this team into what he views as a contending team.
His draft record is at this point disappointing. He had little choice to draft Bennett at the time. I still think Bennett is going to break out to be a 20-25 goal 1st/2nd line center in 2017-2018. He had Tkachuk absolutely fall into his lap. When you take the BPA it has nothing to do with your hockey IQ or drafting ability.
Feaster taking Monahan is a prime example. At the time there were many that thought Nikushkin might be the best choice instead of Monahan. There were even some fans saying we should draft Shinkaruk at #6.
Feaster listened to the scouts and in turn made some extremely ballsy moves that are going to pay off next year when Jankowski scores 20+ as a rookie playing 3rd line minutes.
What has Treliving done? Like I said he's made a trade that is a wash and another that was horrible. He is stubborn.
He sees the player he wants to target and he will do what it takes to get that player with reason. Hamilton was not 3 early picks at first either. He talked himself into that to stop Hamilton from going to Edmonton.
Right now I would gladly take Brandon Carlo and Zach Senyshyn instead of Hamilton.
Carlo was a Top 4 D in his rookie season and Zach Senyshyn is a top right wing prospect scoring 45 goals a year in junior.
Everyone says our needs are a #1RW and #4D well news flash we gave both up in that Hamilton trade.
The reason Treliving hasn't re-signed is because management is objectively examining the moves he's made. Quite frankly, there are many moves that he boldly took that are paying off.
